The Venetians built this artificial lake to create a wonderful freshwater lagoon 5km long and up to 1km wide. Today, the long golden beach between lake and sea is a sunworkshipper’s dream. It can get very busy at either end but there is usually plenty of privacy to be had if you keep on walking.
It is one of the best places on the island for enjoying wildlife. This can, incidentally, include mosquitoes, so take protection. More than 120 bird species have been recorded here and there are also tortoises, turtles, lizards, and a rich selection of plants and flowers.
To get here take the green bus from Corfu Town to Aghios Georgios.
