Corfù City

La Città di Corfù

Handsome Venetian buildings, complemented by French and English Georgian architecture, give Corfu Town an elegant, old-world atmosphere. Below the Old Fortress, sprawled across a twin-peaked promontory, is the Esplanade, the focal point of the town. Opposite is the Liston, an arcade of café-bars with a cosmopolitan air.
The busy commercial area stretches inland from the Esplanade, centred around San Rocco Square, but the most interesting part of Corfu Town is the maze of streets that make up the Old Town, between the Fortress and the Old Port. It consists of several smaller districts: the Campiéllo, the oldest quarter on the northern hill, the Kofinéta near the Esplanade and Agii Apostoli near the cathedral.
You can buy a combinated ticket (8 euro, free for EU students) that allows entry to the Old Fortress, the Byzantine Museum, the Archeological Museum and the Palace of St Michael and St George. You’ll need two days to do justice to Corfu Town’s fine museums and other sights.
